Age is calculated by finding the difference between two dates. The standard method starts with years: how many full calendar years have passed. The remainder is counted in months, then days, then hours and minutes. This tool uses your local calendar, so it correctly handles months of different lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years.
Why Age Can Differ Due to Leap Years
A leap year contains 366 days instead of 365 because an extra day — February 29 — is added to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth's orbit. If you were born on February 29, many systems count your birthday on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years. Leap years also mean that the total number of days you have lived can be one more than a simple year × 365 estimate would suggest.
How To Calculate Age In Days
To calculate age in days, find the difference in milliseconds between today and your date of birth, then divide by 86,400,000 (the number of milliseconds in a day) and take the floor. This accounts for every leap year automatically because the millisecond timestamps already encode the correct calendar day boundaries.
How To Calculate Age In Months
Month-based age counts how many complete calendar months have elapsed. For example, if you were born on March 15 and today is June 10, only 2 full months have passed (March 15 → April 15 → May 15), not 3, because the 15th of June has not yet arrived. This calculator applies that rule precisely.
